Transformasi Pendidikan Pesantren Berbasis Gender Justice dan Non-Violence: Studi Kasus di Pondok Pesantren Tunas Cendekia Cirebon Indonesia

Abstract


This article analyzes the transformation of education at Pondok Pesantren Tunas Cendekia in Cirebon, Indonesia, in developing a gender-just and non-violent educational model. The study is motivated by the persistent patriarchal culture, symbolic violence, and limited leadership opportunities for female students (santri) that continue to prevail in many Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) across Indonesia. Employing a qualitative approach, the research uses field study methods through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and institutional document analysis. Data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model, encompassing data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that: (1) The pesantren has developed an integrative curriculum that combines religious and general sciences grounded in the values of ‘adl (justice), rahmah (compassion), and karāmah al-insān (human dignity). (2) Gender-based character education is implemented through student deliberation forums (musyawarah santri), equal leadership training, and the Student Character Development Unit (UPKS) serving as a safe and counseling space. (3) Cultural transformation is evident in the reconfiguration of relationships between male–female students, teachers (ustaz–ustazah), and caretakers, fostering more egalitarian, dialogical, and participatory interactions. (4) Theologically, the pesantren interprets Islamic teachings through a humanist-prophetic approach, positioning education as a practice of social justice (taḥqīq al-insāniyyah) and an embodiment of Islam as rahmatan lil ‘alamin (a mercy to all creation). This study concludes that Pondok Pesantren Tunas Cendekia represents a praxis model of progressive Islamic education that integrates turāth (classical tradition), gender awareness, and socio-humanitarian engagement. The research contributes to enriching the discourse on transformative Islamic education and offers an applicable framework for developing inclusive pesantren in Indonesia and the broader Muslim world
