Transformasi Nilai Moderasi melalui Kajian Tafsir Al-Iklīl di Pesantren Al-Balagh Bangilan Jawa Timur

Abstract


This study stems from the fact that local interpretations are still treated as “marginal discourse” in the pesantren curriculum, while classical Middle Eastern interpretations remain the mainstream scientific authority. As a result, pesantren lose strategic opportunities to explore sources of knowledge that are closer to their own culture. This study examines the role of the routine study of Tafsīr Al-Iklīl by KH. Misbah Musthafa at the Al-Balagh Bangilan Islamic Boarding School as a medium for the transformation of locally-based moderation values. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach, hermeneutic analysis, and Berger–Luckmann's social construction theory, this study examines how moderate values are produced through texts, taught through the pedagogical methods of kiai, and institutionalized through pesantren social practices. The results show that Al-Iklīl, through the Pegon language and its closeness to Javanese culture, provides a contextual framework for interpreting the values of tolerance, tasāmuh, tawāzun, and anti-extremism. The dialogical and applicative teaching methods enable the gradual internalization of moderation as a manifestation of the living Qur'an. Meanwhile, the authority of the kiai and the social structure of the pesantren reproduce these values into collective norms and moderate habits of society. This study emphasizes the importance of revitalizing the Nusantara interpretation as an epistemic source in the study of the Qur'an and Tafsir. These findings show that local tafsir is not only relevant as a cultural product, but also as an effective instrument in building a contextual, adaptive, and socially rooted practice of religious moderation in Indonesia.
