Periodization of Hadith Sanad Criticism: Historical and Methodological Approaches from the Prophetic Period to the Modern Era
Abstract
This study explores the development of Hadith review from the time of Prophet Muhammad SAW to the ultramodern period. During the Prophet's time, Hadith review was conducted through direct evidence and explanation from the primary source, the Prophet himself. The companions vindicated Hadith through evidence and tested the trustability of narrators. In the companions' period, Hadith review was primarily preventative to maintain the delicacy and authenticity of the stories. Their styles included explaining the source, presenting substantiations, and assessing the narrators' character. In the ultramodern period, Hadith review evolved to respond to challenges posed by orientalists and missionaries who questioned the validity of Hadith. This study also highlights the essential criteria in examining both the chain of transmission( sanad) and the content( matan), including narrator integrity, durability of the chain, and semantic and happy analysis. therefore, Hadith review remains an abecedarian scholarly trouble to save the authenticity of Islamic training.
