Abstract

Sufism, as a mystical dimension within Islam, emphasizes the pursuit of closeness to God through spiritual practices and self-discipline. Sufi practices such as remembrance, fasting, and meditation are designed to purify the soul and achieve purity of the heart. It is hoped that this can increase the tolerance and openness of individuals towards others. The principles of Sufi teachings have the potential to be applied in building religious moderation, especially in the context of tolerance among religious communities. The two main principles that are highlighted are Love and Compassion (al-hubb) and Self-Control (mujahadah an-nafs). Self-control in Sufism teaches individuals to master their desires and worldly cravings. This includes not only restraining oneself from bad deeds, but also redirecting the heart and mind towards positive and beneficial things. Furthermore, the unity of the ummah (al-ittihad, wahdatul wujud) is a basic principle of Sufism that emphasizes the importance of unity and solidarity among the Muslim community. In the view of Sufism, every individual is considered part of a larger unity, that is the Muslim community. By promoting constructive dialogue and mutual respect, Sufism has the potential to create a more inclusive and peaceful society. Therefore, it is important for all parties to play an active role in disseminating the values of Sufism and applying them in daily life. Through these efforts, it is hoped that the common goal of building harmony and tolerance among religious communities can be achieved, especially amidst the increasing complexity of the global world
