Understanding the Qur’an Through Harfiyah Translation: A Study on Kajian Terjemah Al-Qur’an in Surabaya’s Upper-Middle Class.

Abstract


This article examines the utilisation of the Qur’an translation method as an educational instrument for the upper-middle-class community in Surabaya. The article describes the methods and practices employed in Kajian Terjemah Al-Qur’an and analyses the community’s reception of it. Many participants have limited Arabic proficiency, which makes translation essential for understanding the Qur’an. A descriptive qualitative methodology was employed to collect primary data through observations, interviews, and documentation with participants from Citraland, Pakuwon Indah, and Ketintang Permai, as well as instructors from LPPIQ. Secondary data was gathered from existing literature and documents on Qur’anic translation methods. The findings indicate that the harfiyah (literal) translation method is the principal approach that facilitates direct comprehension of the verses by the participants. However, this approach is deficient in terms of cultural and historical depth. Practices include the repetition of verses, the provision of explanations, and the evaluation of these explanations. The challenges of limited participant time and low Arabic proficiency were addressed through the use of online sessions and outdoor recitations, which increased engagement and interest. The study highlights the role of the translation method in enhancing spiritual understanding and community life among Surabaya’s upper-middle class Muslims, and demonstrates its importance in bridging gaps in Arabic proficiency.
