Abstract

The Prophet's hadith about Muslims will be divided into seventy-three groups; just one group survives the fires of hell, often used as the group's truth claims that lead to a single truth claim.  This claim brings internal conflicts among Muslims because each claims his group survived as the hadith suggests. Various questions often arise, is the hadith true or false?  What is the quality of the hadith?  What is the supposed understanding of the divisions of Muslims described in the hadith?  Is it true that Muslims are divided into seventy-three factions?   Who does the group of survivors belong to as said in the hadith? Therefore, research with ‘takhrijul’ hadith gives the answer that this hadith is connected to the Messenger of Allah, with the lowest quality of the hadith ‘hasan’.   Further searches found 11 hadiths that are relevant to the ‘matan’ hadith that are similar and do not contradict, so this hadith has the quality to be ‘sahih lighairihi’. This hadith should not be used as claiming the truth of one group and blaming another but should be understood as a picture given by the Prophet that the Muslims will be more divided than the previous people, as the number 73 is more than the numbers of 72 and 71 in the hadith.
