Abstract

Background: Indonesia's multicultural society faces challenges of national disintegration and social conflict arising from ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity. Early childhood Islamic education requires appropriate frameworks to foster tolerance and national unity. This study examines M. Quraish Shihab's multicultural education concept from his Tafsir Al-Misbah interpretation of Quran Surah Al-Hujurat verses 11-13.Method: This research employs literature study methodology, analyzing primary sources from Tafsir Al-Misbah and related secondary literature on multicultural and early childhood education. Results: The analysis identifies three core concepts: Ta'aruf (mutual knowing), emphasizing interaction and mutual benefit; Egaliter (equality of status), affirming human equality regardless of ethnicity, gender, or race before God; and Takwa (piety), where virtue is measured by God-consciousness rather than material status. These concepts demonstrate strong alignment with early childhood Islamic education principles that value pluralism, humanism, and democratic values. Conclusion: M. Quraish Shihab's multicultural education framework is highly relevant for early childhood Islamic education in Indonesia. Implementation from an early age builds strong personality foundations, fosters national unity, and develops moral character anchored in Islamic values while respecting diversity, preparing children for democratic and harmonious citizenship.
