Qur’anic Response to Mental Disorders: Toward an Integrative Framework of Islamic Psychology

Cima Ghoziah, Kusnadi Kusnadi, Aristhopan Firdaus

Abstract

Mental disorders are an increasingly complex global challenge, particularly when conventional biomedical and psychological approaches are unable to fully address the spiritual needs of religious individuals. In the context of Muslim societies, the Qur'an is often used as a source of tranquillity and psychological recovery, but scientific studies that integrate Qur'anic responses into the framework of modern psychology are still limited. The main research gap lies in the lack of Islamic psychological models that systematically link Qur’anic concepts to the mechanisms of mental disorders and evidence-based clinical interventions. Previous studies tend to be partial, focusing on general religiosity or spiritual therapy without an explicit Qur’anic theoretical foundation. The novelty of this article lies in the development of an integrative Islamic psychology perspective that positions the Qur'an as a conceptual and therapeutic resource in understanding and responding to mental disorders. This article is expected to enrich the discourse on mental health with a religious, contextual, and scientific approach.
